This project aims to preserve and publish crucial, previously unknown, biodiversity data collected from the Ukrainian steppe zone between 2001 and 2021. With only 3% of Ukraine's natural and semi-natural steppes remaining, and the ongoing Russian invasion limiting access to the area, it is essential to safeguard and share this information. The project will process and publish approximately 10 datasets on the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), making over 2,500-3,000 plant locality records accessible to researchers worldwide. Additionally, the project will produce two scientific publications, advancing knowledge of plant diversity and contributing to conservation efforts as well as an understanding of the impact of military action on populations of rare and endangered plants in the study region. This work will ensure that invaluable data on Ukraine’s threatened ecosystems is preserved and leveraged for future research and restoration.
