Documenting Research of the War Impact on People Staying in Boarding Institutions in Ukraine

Some of the most vulnerable groups in Ukraine are people forced into state care and are in social care institutions––the elderly, people with disabilities, people with psychoneurological diseases, orphans and children deprived of parental care. Such institutions include orphanages, boarding schools, care homes, psychoneurological boarding homes, social and psychological rehabilitation centers, etc.
Despite the war that is taking place in a large part of Ukraine, many of these institutions continue to operate without the ability to evacuate clients. This is due to a number of reasons, including low mobility of some wards, the location of institutions in small settlements that are more difficult to leave, lack of staff and material resources, difficulties in organizing evacuations by local authorities and more.
It is important to note that some of these institutions have been under occupation for two months. This further complicates the situation regarding the provision of such institutions with food, medicine and medical care.
At the same time, clients suffer from various problems: lack of medicines, variety of food, qualified medical care, rehabilitation services and, etc. At the same time, most of them cannot leave institutions alone.
Collecting data from the staff and clients of such institutions will provide an opportunity to capture their needs and concerns, as well as documenting how the war has affected their lives, health, emotional well-being and daily care. What do these people feel, what do they hope for and how do they plan their future lives, given the instability of the country’s future?
A report will be published detailing the results of the study. However, in addition to specific stories, we need to understand the general picture of the impact of the war. It is the generalization of the data that will help scientists, journalists and public officials to build further support programs and understand the general context of such influence.
The project is planned to be implemented within one month of receiving the funding.
The main item of expenditure is the support of ten interviewers in the Kharkiv region and the reward for conducting interviews with respondents.
