The Documenting Ukraine program is glad to announce that we will start accepting applications for the 2024 grant cycle in June, with an application deadline of 19 August. For those interested in applying for a grant, we have compiled information about the application materials required, specifics of the program, and answers to frequently asked questions.

The Documenting Ukraine program provides one-time 5000 EUR grants for individual projects documenting various experiences of the full-scale Russo-Ukrainian War or providing artistic and intellectual reflection on these events. The program welcomes applications from Ukrainian academics, writers, journalists, filmmakers, archivists, and other creative professionals.

In this application cycle we are again offering repeat grants for projects that have previously received funding from Documenting Ukraine, or for new projects proposed by people who received Documenting Ukraine support for a previous project. Same as last year, a maximum of 30 will be awarded on a competitive basis. Repeat grants are only open to those people, organizations, and projects that have received ONE previous grant; those who have already received two grants are not eligible.

Applications for the Documenting Ukraine grant must be submitted via the IWM’s online application form, which will be accessible via the Documenting Ukraine website once the application cycle is open. The document package, which must be combined into a single PDF file, consists of:

  • CV
  • Letter of motivation (1-2 pages) that addresses the project’s significance and how it relates to the mission of Documenting Ukraine
  • Project description (1-3 pages) including planned activities, information about who will be carrying out the project and their qualifications, and the desired outcome
  • Contact details of one reference person who is familiar with your work and can speak to its suitability for Documenting Ukraine

If you are applying for a repeat grant, your letter of motivation and/or project description should address how the original grant benefitted your work and what you have accomplished on the project to date.
