Project:
Acts of Writing: Racial Overdetermination, Psychiatric Rationality, Aesthetic Suspension
This book project develops a method-as-theory of “aesthetic anthropology” attentive to practices of aesthesis as distinct from anthropology of aesthetics and its focus on art objects. It is thus an ethnography of aesthetic acts, particularly writing, as counterhegemonic strategies for being-in-the-world in Chicago. In an intensely racialized, pathologized field context that overdetermines language of subject formation, this ethnography interweaves a deconstructive genealogy of the interrelation between racial and psychiatric discourses.
