Rule by Law and the Making of Authoritarian Democracies
This project seeks to understand the role of law in the fashioning of modern authoritarian democracies. Particularly focusing on countries where ethnonationalism is replacing civic nationalism, this project seeks to use India as a case study and examine how law is conducted in its various modes–constitutional, exceptional and extra-legal. As “rule of law” mutates into “rule by law”, it becomes important to understand how the world’s “largest democracy” becomes smaller.
