Staging the Empire:
Soviet-Polish Cultural Initiatives in Propaganda, Science and the Arts, 1943-1957
I am working on a monograph about the gestation of the Soviet empire in East-Central Europe, and in Poland in particular, during the early Cold War. The project examines the Soviet and communist failures to create an attractive and lasting vision of the political project that spanned diverse cultures and ethnic groups. Concentrating on the “long decade” from 1943-57, I am interested in the attempts of a diverse group of people (such as party bureaucrats, political officers, journalists, scientists, intellectuals) to explain and popularize various aspects of the Soviet-Polish relationship to the broader publics in both countries.
