The Transformation of “New Russia”:
From Frontier to Province to Myth

The project seeks to revise the history of the contested region of Southern Ukraine diachronically, connecting past developments to present issues. To do so, I will focus on the initial incorporation of the region into the space of the Russian Empire. From there I will trace the later development and redefinitions of terms used to identify this region—be it “Novorossia” or its competitor “the Southern Ukraine”.
