Kitchen Dissidents and Other Communist Gourmet Stories

My book Communist Gourmet: The Curious History of Food in the People’s Republic of Bulgaria was published in Bulgarian in November 2014. It is a lively, sober, often anecdotic portrait of Bulgarian communism narrated from the unusual perspective of food. It follows Bulgarians’ daily life between 1944 and 1989 – their routine of shopping, cooking, visiting restaurants, dining.
My project at the IWM is to rework it for non- Bulgarian readers: to “translate” the bizarre reality of communism for those who never experienced it. Albena Shkodrova
