Surprisingly, however, few of these historical accounts break free of classic heuristic assumptions: that liberal modernity was the inevitable endpoint of the region’s modernization (what Holmes and Krastev have decried as mimicry of the West) and that the national community, with the nation-state as its telos, is the most organic unit of analysis through which to approach the region. It considers people who moved within, out of, and into the region, interrogating the forces that drove them and the consequences of their movement; examines the flow of ideas that were articulated, set in motion, and resonated in lived experience; and asks how the circulation of material objects, goods, and resources impacted societies and the environment, shaping the relations and hierarchies between places and people.
