Walter Hallstein – an Architect of United Europe

Wednesday, 13 March 2013, 2:00pm - 3:30pm, IWM library
The European integration is not only a success story, but also a story of deep crises. However, the keystone to that success and overcoming of conflicts were – to a certain extend – outstanding individuals who defended the European idea against “nationalists” resistance. One of them was Walter Hallstein, a German diplomat and first President of the European Commission. Taking him as a prominent example Evgenia Kocheva shows in her talk how the commitment to the interests of the European community serves one’s own country at the same time and how the theories of European integration work on practical level.

Evgenia Kocheva is Postgraduate Student in History at the National Research Tomsk State University; currently she is Alexander Herzen Junior Visiting Fellow at the IWM.
