Bulgarian Mental Maps

iStock_000006401822_LargeThe seminar will present the Bulgarian geographical imagination tracing its complex history back to the 19th century and the formation of the Bulgarian national identity. The discussion will be centered on three focal points: the shifting perceptions of Europe and Russia, the image of the Balkans and the idea of the ethnic homeland.

Dessislava Lilova
is Associate Professor of Cultural History at Sofia University in Bulgaria. Currently she is a Visiting Fellow at the IWM.
