Signal or Noise? Power and Powerlessness in the Media

Friday, 28 September 2018, 6:00pm - 8:00pm, IWM library
Since the 2008 financial crisis, many people in Europe and the United States have felt themselves to be living in junk time, a state of empty expectancy. In many countries, people feel they face the tyranny of a past that can’t be resurrected in all its glory and the tyranny of a murky future that stifles dreams of a better life. Elisabeth von Thadden  of Die Zeit,  Katarzyna Wężyk  of Gazeta Wyborcza and Thomas Chatterton Williams  of New York Times Magazine  talk with  IWM Visiting Fellow John Palattella of The Point about how the media has been challenged by some of the features of junk time, such as fake news, political polarization, and reactionary politics.

The event is part of the Vienna Humanities Festival 2018 (see full program).
