Figures of Memory in East and West German Painting 1945-1989

The lecture will trace the ways in which German painters of the Cold War period have dealt with the memories of the Third Reich and the Holocaust in their work. The subject is treated in the cultural and political context of East and West and in relation to the history of modernism in the visual arts.

Andreas Huyssen is Villard Professor of German and Comparative Literature at the Columbia University.
