Cossack dynasties played an important role in the history of the Ukrainian elite during the transition from the early modern to the modern period. The seminar will focus on the genealogy, social origins, structure and social/national self-identification of Cossack officials and their descendants in Sloboda Ukraine (a historical region of Eastern Ukraine), illustrated by numerous examples from the histories of particular families. Questions to be discussed include: What were the relationships between the Cossack clans of the Hetmanate and Sloboda Ukraine Regiments? What is the correlation between the Ukrainian and the imperial identities of Sloboda Ukraine nobles? What are the specificities of their integration into the Russian nobility?
