Research Associate (m/f/d), IWM Ukraine in European Dialogue Program

Jobs and Calls

Initiated in 2015, UiED is dedicated to enabling sustained contact and exchange between scholars, public intellectuals, journalists, activists and policymakers from Ukraine and the rest of Europe. It continues the IWM’s long-standing tradition of practical and intellectual solidarity with societies asserting their right to freedom. Its aim is to foster intellectual and cultural understanding; to support a sovereign, rule-of-law, rights-respecting Ukraine within a vibrant, open Europe; and to enable European, North American, and other scholars, intellectuals, and policymakers to benefit from the insights about politics and civil society which Ukraine provides and that are relevant to the European present and future. Program activities include fellowships, publications, and events. UiED is funded by the Temerty Fund at KBF Canada.

UiED is the cornerstone of the IWM’s engagement with Ukraine’s intellectual sphere, which has expanded since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The UiED research associate will also have the opportunity to contribute to our new research project Documenting Ukraine and to work with other IWM programs to integrate Ukraine into broader intellectual discussions.

This is a full-time position, with an anticipated time split between 50% own research, 50% program activities, starting in the fall of 2022. The initial contract will be for one year; upon mutual agreement, the Research Associate will then become UiED Research Director in the fall of 2023.That position is currently funded through July 2025 with the possibility of extension.

Program activities include:

  • conceptualization and organization of public and academic events in cooperation with the UiED Research Director
  • engagement with visiting fellows, support of fellow selection process, communications with UiED alumni
  • support with publications, including Eurozine focal point, in-house IWM publications (IWMpost, newsletter, etc.), and book translation projects
