The Ukraine Crisis and the Negative-Sum Politics of Eurasia
This book project, a collaboration with Samuel Charap of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, deals with the origins, dynamics, and meaning of the ongoing crisis over Ukraine. Its main claim is that the crisis grew out of irresponsible competition between the West, loosely speaking, and Russia, over the fate of the gray zone between them. The best and indeed the only way forward is for the interested parties to engage in negotiation over the contested issues, a process which has been largely lacking since the Soviet collapse of a generation ago.
