Democracy Without Engagement: The Roots and Patterns of Political Participation in Post-Communist South-Eastern-Europe
My project examines the democracy-participation nexus in the context of post-communist transformations. Although political theory broadly views citizens’ political engagement as playing a vital role in democratic governance, the transition and consolidation of democracy processes in South-Eastern Europe were accompanied by an overall decline in political participation. This project analyzes both the individual-level and the country-aggregated factors that can account for these developments in the region.
