Roma and the New Nationalism
Stalled economic development, perception that governing elites are divorced from everyday life and the dismantling of the welfare state add fuel to the fire of nationalism. In Central and Eastern Europe this affects the policies and attitudes toward Roma. Nationalism, cuts to education and welfare, and a general free market shift add complexity to the riddle of how to integrate and/or spur socioeconomic development among the Roma population. These developments demand empirical accounts.
