The Genealogy of Impartiality
In this project, impartiality’ is not construed as a natural or universal anthropological disposition, but rather as an acquired and culturally encoded habitus which emerges in the course of the seventeenth century and affects a range of scholarly discourses. Taking this assessment as its cue, the project seeks to understand the traditions on which the sudden need for impartiality could build and what functions it fulfilled on the threshold between early modernity and the enlightenment.
