About the IWM
We are an independent institute for advanced study in the humanities and social sciences. Since its foundation in 1982, the Institute for Human Sciences has promoted intellectual exchange between Eastern and Western Europe, between Europe and North America, between academia and society, and among a variety of disciplines and schools of thought. Reaching beyond the confines of the academic world, the Institute’s fellows engage in discussions on a wide range of political, social, economic, and cultural issues. The Rector will guide its strategic development, strengthen and expand its partnerships and consolidate its role as a unique institution at the intersection of scholarship and public debate.
Responsibilities
The Rector serves as the Institute’s chief executive officer and academic leader. They will articulate and implement a compelling vision for the Institute’s future while overseeing its academic and fellowship programs and developing new research initiatives. They will promote public engagement and sustain the IWM’s influential voice in contemporary discussions, cultivate a collegial and inspiring environment for permanent and visiting fellows, staff, and members, and represent the Institute to a wide range of stakeholders, including public donors, private funders, the media, cooperation partners, and the broader public. In pursuing these goals, the Rector will work in close partnership with the IWM’s Collegium and the management team.
Profile
The ideal candidate is an internationally respected scholar with a distinguished record of intellectual achievement. Candidates should demonstrate visionary leadership and the ability to guide a dynamic, interdisciplinary research community, along with experience directing academic institutions, research organizations, or comparable entities. They are expected to bring strong networks across academic, cultural, and policy spheres, as well as a proven capacity for strategic planning, fundraising, and partnership building. Outstanding communication skills and the ability to engage diverse audiences are essential, as is a firm commitment to academic freedom, pluralism of thought, and open intellectual exchange. Proficiency in English is required; proficiency in German is desirable.
Conditions
The IWM is a non-profit association governed by its Board of Trustees and the Collegium. Within this framework, the Rector is appointed by the Board of Trustees and serves as chair of the Collegium. The successful candidate will receive a full-time employment contract under Austrian labor law for a fixed term of five years, with the possibility of renewal. The Institute offers a competitive international compensation package commensurate with the candidate’s credentials and the responsibilities of the position. The preferred start is 2026.
