The European Union and the Habsburg Monarchy |

The Habsburg Empire lasted five centuries, before collapsing in 1918. As the European Union, shallow in history and unloved by those whom it serves, accepts this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, many are wondering whether it can be expected to do better. In an essay for Tr@nsit online British diplomat Robert Cooper, one of the intellectual architects of European foreign policy, shares his reflections on the similarities and dissimilarities between the two polities. He warns that the threats the EU now faces are as deadly as those that confronted the Habsburg Monarchy a hundred years ago. Can we arrive at a more thorough, historically grounded understanding of the risks of a disintegration of the EU by drawing on the Habsburg experience?
A trigger for Cooper’s reflections was his participation in the recent conference „The Political Logics of DisIntegration: The Habsburg and Yugoslav Experiences” that IWM organised in October 2012.
