"The Flame of Eternity" in Russian
The Russian edition of Krzysztof Michalski’s “The Flame of Eternity. An Interpretation of Nietzsche's Thought” has just come out. The European Union and the Habsburg Monarchy
The Habsburg Empire lasted five centuries, before collapsing in 1918. As the European Union, shallow in history and unloved by those whom it serves, accepts this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, many are wondering whether it can be expected to do better. In an essay for Tr@nsit online British diplomat Robert Cooper, one of the intellectual architects of European foreign policy, shares his reflections on the similarities and dissimilarities between the two polities. He warns that the threats the EU now faces are as deadly as those that confronted the Habsburg Monarchy a hundred years ago. Can we arrive at a more thorough, historically grounded understanding of the risks of a disintegration of the EU by drawing on the Habsburg experience?
A trigger for Cooper’s reflections was his participation in the recent conference „The Political Logics of DisIntegration: The Habsburg and Yugoslav Experiences” that IWM organised in October 2012.

IWMpost 110
Is Russia on the edge of a political change? If so, which are the social ferments of that change, what is its nature, and how does it manifest itself? In the newly published IWMpost issue Russian analysts Fyodor Lukyanov and Nikolay Petrov delve into these topics. Literary scholar Alexander Etkind adds a surprising cultural-historical perspective to understanding Russian society.
George Soros challenges the orthodoxies on the future of the EU; prominent Austrian economists Karl Aiginger, Ewald Nowotny, Margit Schratzenstaller and Wilfried Stadler take the challenge and enter the debate.
Mark Lilla draws our attention to two recent books that analyze the growing class divide in the US, while pointing to the political class divide that is taking over US politics.

>>> More...
Power as Business in Putin’s Russia
“You can forget Russia as a democracy”, states IWM fellow Vladislav Inozemtsev in his recent Spiegel interview (in German). In his lecture at IWM Inozemtsev will look at how public service was transformed in Russia during Putin’s reign into the most profitable business, and will analyze why for such a long time the majority of the population has tolerated this economic-political system. Today’s Russia is a comparatively free and liberal country where citizens are able to run businesses, acquire property, leave the country or return. This makes people essentially individualistic while the demand for collective action and democratic participation is decreasing. >>> More...
