“Debating Europe” is a matinée series of public debates which take place at the Vienna Burgtheater. It brings leading politicians, scholars and intellectuals together on-stage to discuss the self-understanding of the society in which we live, thus contributing to an emerging European public sphere. The debates have addressed essential issues of European identity such as European solidarity, the EU’s foreign policy, Europe twenty years after 1989, and the definition of Europe’s borders. In 2012 the debates will focus on the unity of Europe, its value system, and the crisis.

Die Matinée-Serie „Europa im Diskurs“ am Wiener Burgtheater bringt führende Politiker, Wissenschaftler und Intellektuelle gemeinsam auf die Bühne. Die Debatten sollen zum Selbstverständnis unserer Gesellschaft und zur Stärkung einer europäischen Öffentlichkeit beitragen. Diskutiert wurden grundlegende Aspekte der europäischen Identität wie beispielsweise Solidarität, europäische Außenpolitik, Europa 20 Jahre nach 1989 sowie die Definition der Grenzen Europas. Im Jahr 2012 stehen die Einheit Europas, sein Wertesystem und die Krise im Zentrum der Debatten.
