Charles Taylor is Professor em. of Philosophy at McGill University, Montreal, and Permanent Fellow
at the IWM, Vienna. Born in Canada in 1931, he studied at McGill University and Oxford University,
where he received his PhD in 1961. He teaches philosophy at McGill University and was Visiting Professor
at the Universities of Oxford, Princeton, Berkeley, Frankfurt a. M., and at the Hebrew University in
Jerusalem. Amongst others he was awarded the 2007 Templeton Price and the 2008 Kyoto Price, which is
one of the world's leading awards for lifetime achievements in the social sciences and humanties.
His main research fields are: Philosophy of Action, Philosophy of Social Science, Political Theory, Greek Political Thought, Moral Philosophy, the Culture of Western Modernity, Philosophy of Language, Theories of Meaning, Language and Politics, German Idealism, Religion and Secularism.
