The core of the IWM building and venue for many of its events is the library, which holds around 40,000 volumes and subscribes to 160 periodicals. The composition of the collection reflects the broad fields of research and ongoing projects of the IWM, most notably, philosophy, history, sociology, political science, and cultural studies. Furthermore, the library holds extensive collections of literature in gender studies and publications in Eastern European languages. The library has an electronic catalogue including a directory for individual articles published in collections. The catalogue can be accessed through the in-house network. The IWM library also includes the library of the Polish writer, poet and translator Paweł Hertz (1918–2001). He was associated with the IWM for many years. His collection of books, a valuable source for translators, is now open to the public. As a part of the focus “The Philosophical Work of Jan Patočka”, an archive containing the work of the Czech philosopher was established in 1984. Today, the Institute’s Patočka Archive holds all known published and unpublished texts as well as Patočka’s correspondence and relevant secondary literature. The materials of the archive are available to all scholars interested in his work.

Bibliothek

Das Herz des Institutsgebäudes ist die Bibliothek. Sie ist nicht nur ein Raum zum Lesen, hier finden auch die meisten Veranstaltungen des IWM statt. Die Bibliothek umfasst rund 40.000 Bände und 160 abonnierte Zeitschriften; ihre Sammlungsschwerpunkte entsprechen den Forschungsinteressen des Instituts, d. h. sie enthält vor allem Werke aus Philosophie, Geschichte, Soziologie, Politologie und den Kulturwissenschaften. Darüber hinaus hat die Bibliothek große Bestände im Bereich Gender Studies und Literatur in osteuropäischen Sprachen. Der Katalog, der neben Buchtiteln auch Einzelbeiträge erfasst, ist über das institutseigene Netzwerk zugänglich. Bestandteil der IWM Bibliothek ist auch die Bibliothek des polnischen Dichters, Schriftstellers und Übersetzers Paweł Hertz (1918–2001). Er war dem IWM über viele Jahre eng verbunden. Seine umfangreiche Büchersammlung bietet wertvolles Quellenmaterial für Übersetzer und ist öffentlich zugänglich. Im Jahr 1984 richtete das Institut im Rahmen seines Projekts zur Erforschung und Publikation des philosophischen Werks von Jan Patočka ein Archiv ein, das heute alle bekannten publizierten und unpublizierten Schriften des Prager Philosophen enthält sowie mehrere Briefwechsel und die einschlägige Sekundärliteratur. Die Bestände stehen allen interessierten Forschern zur Verfügung.
