My project is the first attempt to create a comprehensive, anthropologically oriented study of the szlachta judiciary on Ukrainian lands that became a part of the Crown of Poland with the Union of Lublin of 1569 (Volhynian, Kyiv and Bracław voivodeships). The judiciary mirrored society at large, was governed by the same principles, and could modify laws to ensure the desired public peace. Therefore, my research will focus not just on the judiciary but also on the values and quotidian practices of the szlachta society.
