During his fellowship, Kristijan Fidanovski will be finalizing his PhD research on pronatalist policy and politics in Eastern Europe, which sits at the intersection of social policy, demography, and political science. His research examines what profiles of children are typically prioritized by pronatalist child benefits, what sets of concerns pronatalist policymakers tend to express regarding low fertility (e.g., socioeconomic, patriotic, or moral), and to what extent pronatalist policy interventions can increase birth rates. Since his work is primarily focused on Eastern Europe (e.g., Serbia, Poland, Hungary), Fidanovski is particularly keen on exchanging ideas and knowledge with regional specialists at the IWM and in Vienna more broadly. His other research interests and publication record include bilateral disputes, electoral systems, and European Union enlargement into the Western Balkans.
