Gezi Park Protests, June 2013

In his lecture, Ivaylo Ditchev will focus on urban spaces as a medium in the communication between groups and individuals to produce significations of domination, power, unity, misery and rebellion.

By reflecting on two types of protests those in countries undergoing a period of crisis (like Spain and Greece) and those countries with booming economies (such as Turkey and Brazil) he analyzes them in a double perspective: as events staged locally, but with one eye on the potential global audience.

Ivaylo Ditchev is Professor of Cultural Anthropology at the University of Sofia and IWM Visting Fellow from November to December 2014.
