Gessen_Masha_221_300Masha Gessen is a Russian and American journalist, author and activist noted for her opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin. 2014 she published the Putin-Biography The Man Without a Face: The Unlikely Rise of Vladimir Putin and Words Will Break Cement: The Passion of Pussy Riot, a very personal book on the Pussy Riot activists. Gessen has given talks at the Council on Foreign Relations and at the Personal Democracy Forum in New York. 2014 she spoke at the Oslo Freedom Forum and was interviewed in the documentary film, Campaign of Hate: Russia and Gay Propaganda. Masha Gessen was the Guest of Honor at the 2012 ceremony awarding the Swedish Grand Prize for Journalism. In 2003 she won the Media for Liberty Award for her Vanity Fair article “The Wrath of Putin”. For her current project on Putin’s New Ideology she received an Andrew Carnegie Fellowship. In 1999 she was a Milena Jesenska Visiting Fellow at the IWM.
