One Road to Unfreedom or Many?

Thursday, 22 November 2018, 4:00pm - 5:30pm, Charles University Prague, Filozoficka Fakulta
Across the globe, the tenets of democracy are under attack and the popularity of illiberal political forces is mounting. How much do these forces have in common? What motivates them, what tactics and rhetoric do they use, and what visions of the past and future do they rely on? The answers to these questions will help us think more carefully about the threats facing us today and formulate a way forward in a time of uncertainty. Timothy Snyder, the author of  The Road to Unfreedom, will discuss the resurgence of authoritarianism and how we should respond with Czech political scientist Pavel Barša.

Timothy Snyder is the Levin Professor of History at Yale University and IWM Permanent Fellow.

Pavel Barša is Professor of political philosophy at the University of Prague. In 2017 he was a Jan Patočka Visiting Fellow at the IWM.
