On the Future of an Economic Miracle

Thursday, 8 March 2012, 2:00pm - 4:00pm, IWM library

Seminar “Faces of Eastern Europe”

Miroslav Beblavy, a Slovak Member of Parliament and a Senior Research Fellow at Center for European Policy Studies in Brussels, will deliver a presentation on Slovak economic performance and its prospects just two days before upcoming early parliamentary elections. After 14 years of largely neoliberal policies and the best growth performance in the whole EU during the 2000-2010 period, there is a heightened degree of uncertainty about the future path of economic and social policy. Will Slovakia follow Hungary into heterodox and populist policies or will it implement a concerted jump towards more “knowledge economy”-oriented economic policies or will it just muddle through?

Miroslav Beblavy is Member of the Slovak Parliament, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), Brussels, Associate Professor of Public Policy, Comenius University, Bratislava.
