TischnerThe 21st Tischner Debate reopens the legendary discussion series in memory of Fr. Józef Tischner, one of the founding members of the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. The first 20 discussions took place between 2005 and 2010. Outstanding intellectuals and important public figures such as GiulianoAmato, Ralf Dahrendorf, Joschka Fischer, Bronislaw Geremek, Simon Peres, Michael Sandel, Charles Taylor, Adam Zagajewski and others debated the future of Europe, climate change, the public role of religion, and moral dilemmas, among others. The debates were always chaired by Marcin Król and Krzysztof Michalski, the founding rector of the Institute for Human Sciences. More than one year after Krzysztof Michalski’s death, this tradition will be continued.

This year’s participants include Ivan Krastev (political scientist, IWM Permanent Fellow, Chair of the Board of the Centre for Liberal Strategies in Sofia), Marcin Król (Professor of History of Ideas and Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of Warsaw, editor-in-chief of Res Publica), and Shalini Randeria (designated IWM Rector, beginning with 2015; Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Social Anthropology and Sociology at the Graduate Institute in Geneva). Opening comments will be provided by Marcin Król and Karolina Wigura (Head of the political section of Kultura Liberalna). The American historian Timothy Snyder (IWM Permanent Fellow and Bird White Housum Professor of History at Yale University) will chair the debate.

The 21st Tischner Debate is jointly organized by Kultura Liberalna, the University of Warsaw and the IWM. Featured media partners include Gazeta Wyborcza, TVN 24 and Radio TOK FM. The debate is open to the public.
