The Selection (A válogatás), Hungary 1970
Directed by Gyula Gazdag

41 minutes

The Selection follows a process rich with material of its own contradictions — the means by which an oil refinery’s Communist Youth Organization chapter decides upon hiring a rock’n’roll group in order to attract youth to apply for membership. The climactic audition is a battle of five politically correct bands, one off-key group after another performing the same lugubrious song for a stern-faced jury and expressionless rank-and-file audience.

Gyula Gazdag is Filmmaker, Professor at UCLA, Artistic Director of Sundance Filmmakers Lab.
