Berlin, the Capital of the Twentieth Century?

Wednesday, 31 October 2012, 2:00pm - 3:30pm, IWM library
This seminar introduction will raise questions rather than provide answers: how can the former Soviet bloc countries reconstruct their cultural narratives that had been derailed by censorship during the communist era? Can they find such issues that can incorporate their respective narratives into the dominant (Western) one? Can the position of an East European artist/author offer a particular vantage point for piercing insights in global matters? A historical case study of interwar Berlin as an “irregularly” becoming new cultural center will be examined.
